Theme 1 | Climate Change, Population Growth and Metal Demand

09:25‐09:40  Scene setting by Prof. Dr. Jean‐Pascal van Ypersele, UCL, Louvain‐la‐Neuve, Belgium

In this introduction we intend to shed some light on the phenomenal infrastructural challenges that will be essential to shift towards a
carbon neutral economy. More specifically we will zoom in on the requirements for renewable energy and the electrification of
transport, at a time when 140 million people are joining the middle classes annually and the world’s population is expected to
increase by two billion in the next 30 years.
